The Cubs beat Cincinnati 8-5 in a game remembered more for Andre Dawson being ejected in the seventh inning by umpire Joe West for arguing balls and strikes. Dawson, who argued very few calls, exploded after being called out on a low and away pitch. George Bell stood in the on deck circle watching the situation and repeatedly looked at Cub manager Jim Essian as if to say, "Are you coming out to protect your player?" After realizing the answer was, No," Bell went to the batter's box to pull Dawson away.
Dawson then bumped West and was ejected. At this point, Essian emerged from the dugout to argue with West. Essian was also ejected. Dawson, now in the Cub dugout, continued to scream at West. He then proceeded to throw a couple dozen bats out of the dugout and onto the field. West walked over and counted each bat that Dawson threw, making Dawson throw even more bats. The crowd reacted by throwing beer Cubs into the outfield further delaying play.
After the smoke cleared, more bizzare events transpired. In the eighth inning, the Cubs' Doug Dascenzo attempted a sacrifice bunt. A frustrated Rob Dibble picked up the ball and fired it at Dascenzo -- not at the first baseman. Dibble stood between the mound and the first base line with his hands on his knees hanging his head. West promptly ejected Dibble. The Wrigley bleachers then emptied the rest of their evening's trash on the field.
