Michael Joseph Bielecki (born July 31, 1959 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a former professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1984-1997. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round (8th pick) of the 1979 amateur draft (Secondary Phase) . He made his debut on September 14, 1984. His final game was on August 16. 1997.

Bielecki's best season came in 1989 with the Cubs, as he won 18 games and helped the team to the 1989 National League East division title. He started Games 2 and 5 of the National League Championship Series that year, helping the Cubs win Game 2, even though Lester Lancaster picked up the win.

Bielecki served as a studio analyst for Fox Sports Chicago to do pre- and post-game shows. Among his most memorable lines was a remark he made after the Cubs feebly lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates one evening. "Right now, the Cubs are flatter than my junior year prom date."

Fast Facts

  • In 1989, he won a career high 18 games for the Cubs.
  • As an Indian, Bielecki had been invited to join Steve Olin, Tim Crews and Bob Ojeda on a fishing boat in spring training, 1993, but declined. [1] The subsequent crash of the boat killed Olin and Crews, and nearly killed Ojeda.
  • He appeared in the 1996 World Series as a member of the Braves.
