White Sox 6 Rangers 0

April 19, 2007

U.S. Cellular Field

Mark Buehrle threw the first no-hitter of his career, beating the Texas Rangers 6-0. Buehrle faced the minimum 27 batters. Only a fifth inning walk to Sammy Sosa prevented a perfect game. Sosa was picked off of first by Buehrle.

The Setup

Buehrle was in the final season of his contract before he'd be eligible for free agency. As the Sox were unable to sign him during the offseason, it appeared as if White Sox general manager Kenny Williams would deal Buehrle should the White Sox fall out of contention. Buehrle, a native of the St. Louis area, grew up a St. Louis Cardinals fans and had made no secret that he harbored dreams of pitching for his Cardinals, so many Sox fans were resigned to losing Buehrle to the Cards after the season, especially when Buehrle was photographed in St. Louis during Game 4 of the 2006 World Series cheering on the Cardinals and wearing a Cardinals cap.

Buehrle also had struggled in 2006, particularly in the second half, causing some to question whether all of his 200-plus innings were catching up to him.

The Texas Rangers came into Chicago with a familiar face: ex-Sox outfielder Sammy Sosa. Sosa, a favorite target of Sox fans' jeers, had sat out the 2006 season. In 2005, he played for the Baltimore Orioles, but was on the disabled list and did not make the trip to U.S. Cellular Field. This represented his first game in Chicago since 2004.
